Boy’s South West Inter Counties and 6 piece Apparatus 2012

9 young gymnasts travelled to Exeter last Sunday to compete in the Boy’s South West Compulsory and Voluntary Apparatus. The boys were all representing the Swallows of Helston Gymnastics Club and 6 made up the Under 14 Cornwall team for the Inter Counties event.

Competing in his first competition outside Cornwall was 8 year old Cameron Jenkin. After recently becoming the Under 10 Cornish Apparatus Champion, Cameron made a great effort on all pieces. At the end of a very tough Compulsory competition against some very talented 8 year olds, Cameron was ranked in 18th place with his best position on High Bar, 8th.

9 year old, Matthew Bolton competed in the Under 10 Compulsory event against 32 other boys from around the region. Matt made some consistent routines to end in overall 14th place with his best score on High Bar, 7th place. A very pleasing result for Matthew.

In the afternoon’s events the Inter Counties Team was in action as well as competing for the Voluntary championships. The Under 14 Cornwall team comprised of Elliot Bullen, Matthew Heaney, Calum Walklett, Cameron Wheat, Jonathan Murray and Tom Rimmer. The boys had to make a great team effort to improve on last year’s 5th place overall. Calum made some fantastic routines on High Bar, executing two new skills into his routine and a near perfect vault leading the team to the overall Silver medal at the end of the day.

In the Under 10 Voluntary section Elliot was ranked overall 5th with a Silver medal for his Rings routine. Matthew took a Bronze medal on Pommel with a much improved routine and including a newly perfected skill.

In the Under 12 Voluntary event, Calum Walklett had a near perfect competition until his final Pommel routine! Calum finished his competition in overall Silver medal position taking Gold on Vault, Silver for his High Bar and Bronze on the Rings. Team mate Cameron took a Bronze medal on Vault.

In the Under 14 event Jonathan and Tom were unable to medal on this occasion, but nevertheless contributed to the scores to win Cornwall’s team Silver medal.

In the Over 14 age group, Swallows had one gymnast competing. Jaron Morgan made a fantastic Pommel routine to score a personal best score as well as a near perfect vault for a core of 14.1. Jaron was ranked in Gold medal position, with Gold medals on all the apparatus except Parallel Bars. Jaron finished in Silver medal for this apparatus.

Another brilliant competition for the Boys and their coaches and a great triumph for Cornwall gymnastics.
